Civility is DEAD!
For far too long I believed it was my job to be a bridge builder. That job is over.
By trade I am an educator. I have always believed in the power of education. That education was and could be the great equalizer. So, many moons ago I took my work from the classroom to Capitol Hill and then eventually to cable news. I believed that if people truly knew better that they would BE BETTER. However, the last decade plus in politics has proven me wrong.
While I once believed that there was a time and place to try and build bridges of understanding, as Dream Hampton so eloquently stated, “never waste your time trying to explain who you are to people who are committed to misunderstanding you.” We’re at a time in our politics and our culture where we see just how committed people are to their biases and their hate. Masking their commitments to white supremacy and erasing diversity, equity and inclusion as a “commitment to excellence” when it’s just bold faced racism.
We need to place our energy reaching those that want to be reached. Waking up people who actually want to be better so that they can do better. 30-40% of the population is gone and frankly they have never been for justice or equity. We need to focus our efforts on the majority instead of giving up so much space and oxygen to the hyped up minority.
I unpack more in today’s Woke Wednesday video!
It’s been dead. Democrats need to wake the fuck up😴
I had a fellow organizer who told me that it's too late to get people through the door into the dining room; we have to start the meal with people who are already at the table, leaving seats for folks to come in when they recognize that justice for all is the only path forward.
