Escalating Authoritarianism

Unpacking the Modern Fascist Playbook and the Crushing of American Dissent

The actions and rhetoric of the administration have prompted a dire comparison to the mechanisms of historical fascist regimes, leading many to sound the alarm on a precipitous slide toward authoritarianism. Far from being a hyperbolic exaggeration, the systematic steps taken—from the militarization of domestic law enforcement to the explicit targeting of political dissent—mirror the alarming blueprints used by 20th-century dictators to consolidate absolute power.

Echoes of History: The Playbook of Power Consolidation

The strategy to crush opposition and unify power relies on a chillingly familiar playbook, one that historically leverages manufactured crises and the dehumanization of enemies.

Manufacturing the ‘Reichstag Fire’

A critical step in seizing total power is the creation of a national crisis that justifies the suspension of civil liberties. In 1933, the Reichstag fire was exploited by the Nazis to push through emergency legislation, abolishing constitutional protections and enabling the detention of political opponents without charge.

The current political climate has seen a continuous search for a similar event—a modern “Reichstag fire”—to justify unprecedented government action. Efforts to unilaterally declare Antifa a terrorist organization and the aggressive deployment of federal agents to U.S. cities like Portland are seen as attempts to create this justifying crisis. By labeling political opposition as a “terror threat,” the administration seeks to invoke the kind of national emergency that allows for the consolidation of power and the crushing of dissent.

Dehumanization and the ‘In-Group/Out-Group’ Divide

Fascist movements thrive on creating a stark in-group versus out-group dichotomy, framing the opposition as not just wrong, but “evil.” This language is not merely rhetorical; it is a deliberate strategy of dehumanization—the necessary prelude to state-sanctioned violence.

By labeling political opponents and liberal thought as “evil” and “unhuman,” the administration aligns with the conspiratorial QAnon narrative, which falsely portrays opponents as “devil-worshipping pedophiles.” As history has shown, once a group is dehumanized through language, the groundwork is laid for the state to identify a “solution” to the “problem,” which inevitably involves persecution.

Weaponizing the State: Targeting Dissent and Thought

Recent policy directives demonstrate a clear intent to use the full weight of the federal security apparatus against domestic political adversaries.

National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7)

The signing of NSPM-7 is particularly alarming. This national security directive significantly expands the definition of domestic terrorism to include common anti-capitalist or anti-American/anti-Christian beliefs as indicators of radical left violence. The memorandum directs federal agencies, including the Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs), to investigate not only the principal actors in alleged political violence but also the institutional and individual funders, officers, and employees of organizations that “aid and abet” them.

This move effectively criminalizes ideological dissent and aims to choke the financial and organizational support for progressive and non-governmental organizations. By using counterterrorism tools to police thought and political speech, the administration has taken an unprecedented step in American history to dismantle “left-wing terrorism,” prioritizing an ideological purge over addressing established threats like right-wing extremism and mass shootings.

The Rise of the ‘Shadow President’

The figure of Senior Policy Advisor Stephen Miller exemplifies the ideological drive behind this agenda. Miller, described as a true believer and the most powerful unelected person in government, has been the primary architect of draconian immigration policies, including the forced separation of families at the border, and is reported to be behind extrajudicial military actions in foreign nations.

His longevity and influence within the administration are attributed to his fierce loyalty and single-minded obsession with a white nationalist agenda, which he reportedly outworks all rivals to advance. Miller’s actions, and the reward of his radicalism, underscore the administration’s fundamental commitment to policies rooted in xenophobia and ethno-nationalism.

Conclusion: The Urgency of Recognizing Fascism

The evidence—from the open talk of mass detention centers for dissenters to the aggressive targeting of states and cities that oppose federal policy—compels the use of the term fascism. This is not simply partisan disagreement but a fundamental assault on the principles of liberal democracy.

Fascism, defined as a populist movement characterized by a centralized autocratic government, the exaltation of nation and race above the individual, and the forcible suppression of opposition, captures the totality of the current administration’s strategy. The goal is to fully criminalize ideological opposition and, under the label of “terrorist,” to suspend all constitutional rights and protections for opponents, effectively establishing a totalitarian state.

The pattern of escalation, the adoption of historical fascist rhetoric, and the systematic use of the state apparatus against political enemies demonstrate that the warning is not about a future threat, but about a current reality. The time to recognize and resist the dismantling of democratic institutions is not tomorrow, but now.
