I remember exactly where I was on January 6th. Sitting in my patrol car, watching the Capitol breach unfold live on my iPad . I was still on the job back then. About twenty years in. I called around to see if we had tactical units headed in. The response?

“They’re just tourists. Nothing violent here.”

That’s when I knew.

Not just that the system was cracked, but that it had made peace with the lie.

And that it was time for me to go.

So when I read your words and then saw the headline about Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death I felt that same quiet ache creeping back in. Because that wasn’t just an actor dying. That was a mirror breaking. A version of us that used to be visible and even beloved slipping further out of reach.

Theo wasn’t perfect. But he was safe. Centered. And real enough to believe in.

And now? Everything about this moment, Trump’s rage, the weakening dollar, the crypto grift, the distraction campaigns, the performative leadership on both sides feels like the total collapse of that belief.

Danielle with this post you traced the anatomy of national grief.

You said the quiet part most people still haven’t found words for.

And for those of us who’ve been inside the machine, watching it rust from the inside out it hits different.

I’ve been writing through some of this, too. Quietly. For whoever still remembers what we used to imagine ourselves becoming.

Xplisset- What an amazing observer and writer you are! Do you have your own Substack posts? Your insights and perspective are valuable! Sadly, I barely remember "what we used to imagine ourselves becoming." :(

Danielle, I always appreciate that you don't mince words, and that you express OUR sentiments in your emotions, your voice and your word choice!

My sister contacted me about "Theo", and I was sad to hear of his death. Wow, Danielle says the future is not promised, and here was a guy with his family just enjoying the warm waters of beautiful Costa Rica. I only hope that Malcolm-Jamal Warner realized what an important role model he was to so many, and how his smiling face and the color of his skin provided hope to those who yearned to see someone who looked like themselves on t.v., and hope to someone like me who believed that some day Martin Luther King's Jr. "dream" might some day be fully realized.

Yeah I live in Greece half of the time and believe me Greeks are appalled at what's going on in the U.S. Those who have financial means are always sending their kids off either to U.S. universities or the U.K. Meaning they are ready to pay big buckeroonies - $🤑$ - to attend U.S. colleges for the 'prestige'. I definitely do not agree with this mentality, but for sure, the U.S. is not now being viewed as a destination for their kids. Maybe that's an effin good thing. Fed up with supporting these elitist schools. On the other hand, they are just the canary in the coal mine. Education - lousy as it is in general in the U.S. - is gonna be totally destroyed. Which is the effin goal! So yeah where exactly are we headed? As you say Danielle - they don't seem to give a shit because there is probably a plan in place. 😱🤖🐊

I too was saddened to hear the shocking news. My mom used to say something like Billy Joel sang in one of his early songs - that “only the good die young “.

I prefer to process these type of tragedies as God gathering up the humans with genuine good souls until only the putrid like tRump are left in order to cast them into there hell.

I’m aware that my view will strike some as crazy but it’s the only thought that helps my soul reach some peace.
